• GBIC = GigaBit Interface Converter modules = GBICs
• SFP = Small Form-factor Pluggable modules = SFPs

GBICs and SFPs are types of optical transceivers used for fiber optic communications that transmit and receive data over optical fibers. GBICs and SFPs are equal in performance with the only major difference being their size. SFPs are much smaller than GBICs and sometimes are referred to as mini GBICs. Terms like GBICs, SFPs, Optics, and Transceivers are casually used interchangeably in conversation, despite [minor] technical differences.
